Different Style of BharatNatyam (Part 8) -- Kolar Bani, Pudukottai Bani, Kattumannarkoil Bani, Nanjagnud Bani, Muguru Bani, Chintamani&Mulabagalu Bani
1. Kolar Bani : Kolar or Kolara is a city in Karnataka known for its milk production and gold mines. Devadasis were known to perform in Someshwaratemples.GuruDr. C Radhakrishn and Guru PadhminiShreedhar are famous Kolar Bani exponent. This style is known for excellent rythemic patterns and graceful movements with flowing Adavus.
2. Pudukottai :Pudukottai has hold its importance since the age of Cholas Pandyas , Thondaimans. Situated on the banks of river Vellar, this was a merchant town and hence lot of patronage for art came from the fluent merchant class.
3. Kattumannarkoil : Kattumannarkoilis a small temple town in Cuddalor district in Tamil Nadu. VidwanMuthukumarswamypillai established this Bani. He kept a healthy body and believed that only in healthy body resides a creative mind. He also observed the spiritual regimen and observane of Bhramacharyvrata from 27 years. Sarojavaidhyanathan is a tourch bearer of this Bani.
4. Nanjagnud : Nanjagnud now known as Nanjangud is a small town in present day Mysore district of Karnataka on the banks of the river Kapila . Its close vicinity to the Mysore court was the reason that culture and art grew many folds. Known as Dakshina Kashi for its famous temple of Srikanteshwara. This style mainly focuses on the Yogic Postures. However one can see a perfect blend of Nritta, Expression & Yoga. Gurus like Subramanya Kaushik, Dasappa, Rajamma gained prominence in the society (around 1890). GeetaVishwanath, Dr Mala Shashikantwere performers under this Bani.
5. Muguru:Muguru is a small village temple town in Mysore district of Karnataka. This specific style developed during the late 1800s (1860). Nirupana are the speciality of this style with lot of importance given to Nritta. Amrithappa, Subbanna were the prominent gurus while performers like MuruguJejamma gained lot of respect in the society. MuguruAmritappa (~1848~1920) [3] a gifted Natyacharya,alongwithMuguruSubbanna, developed the Muguru tradition of Bharatanatyam.KrishnarajaWodeyar III appointed Amrutappa to head the ashthana troupe. Amritappa was a great teacher, and had a vast following of disciples. Once, he continuously performed Natuvangam for twenty four performing teams that had complex Nritta items, and it was considered an extraordinary feat.
6. Chintamani&Mulabagalu : This style rose to prominence during 1880. Though extinct now, the flowing movements and grandeur of the costumes were breath taking.
